Significance of STUTIS

Srimad Bhagavatham is the ideal reference for one to develop and follow the path of devotion or Bhakti.

The primary substantiation for this has been Sri Veda Vyasa himself as he composed this auspicious work on the advice of sage Narada to get himself the mental peace and the eternal bliss which was still missing even after creating 17 other Puranas and the great epic Mahabharatha. As we all know, the gigantic epic Mahabharatha has all Dharma and sastras mentioned in it at various places. However, in spite of unleashing all these rules of life, Veda Vyasa had not emphasized the impact of Bhakti and the surrender with devotion to the supreme being, which ultimately was done in Srimad Bhagavatha. Thus Srimad Bhagavatham serves as an eternal medicine that is sweet but at the same time, cures one of the ill effects of sweetness. A good simile would be the "chukkumaanam", a ginger-based sweet (our guard for digestion) that our grandma used to give during Diwali time when we devoured the plates of sweets prepared for the occasion.

The second substantiation for Bhagavatha's greatness is Shree Shuka, where the born Brahmajnani, who ran away from his dad to escape from Upanayanam, went back and stayed by his side to internalize the entire Bhagavatham and later spent 7 full days with king Pareekshith to share the same.

What makes Bhagavatha such a great work?

It is the perennial listing of stuthees and constant reminders of sharanagathi that makes it divine. From cover to cover, the work is a collection of many stuthees, like shuka stuthi, Kunti sthuthi, bheeshma stuthi, etc. Lets' look closely at the "famous five" among them viz. Kunti Stuthi, Bheeshma Stuthi, Dhruva Stuthi, Prahlada Stuthi and Gajendra Stuthi. All the stuthees praise. lord with a realization that the supreme being formless ('Nirguna') essence prevails everywhere and as the one which is the element of life in each one of us. But at the same time, the stuthees are rendered mostly at one of the physical form or avatar of the god, mostly Krishna in this great work

This is a key takeaway for each of us... develop devotion to our dear god, be it Rama or Krishna or Narasimha.. but do with a realization that the god is not just that form but beyond everyone, the ultimate infinity where the universe resides.
