M S Ranganathan

Sriman Narayaneeyam is a devotional hymn composed by Shri Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri in praise of the glory of Lord Sri GURUVAYOORAPPA. Narayaneeyam consists of 1036 Shlokas across 100 Daskams. It is quintessence of Srimad Bhagavatam composed by the Great Sage Veda Vyasa. Each Shloka of Narayaneeyam has got the Blessings of Lord Guruvayoorappa. The services rendered by Scholars like Sri. Anjam Madhavan Namboodiri, Brahmasree Sengalipuram Anantharama Deekshitar in making Narayaneeyam popular and within the reach of common man is praise worthy.

The idol of Lord Guruvayoorappa is of Divine Origin. It was worshipped by Vasudeva and later by Krishna himself at Dwaraka. Lord Krishna instructed Uddhava to install the Idol at a suitable place after Lords “Swargarohanam”. Uddhava in turn sought the help of Guru Brihaspati to implement Krishna’s instructions. Guru along with Vayu Deva installed the Idol at the present location. Thus the place is named as Guruvayoor. Because of the Glory of the Idol this place is also known as "Bhooloka Vaikuntam".

The Author Bhattathiri was born in 1560 AD as the second son of Mathrudatta in Melpathur Illam in Malappuram district of Kerala. Bhattathiri learnt his basic lessons from his elder brother. He took lessons of Sanskrit from his father and Vedas from Madhavan Othikkan. At the age of 18, Bhattathiri came into contact with Achyuta Pisharady. He became Sishya of Guru Achyuta Pisharody and later married his niece. In the meantime the Guru developed Vaatha Roga (acute Arthritis). Out of sheer Guru Bhakthi, Bhattathiri ritualistically transferred his Gurus Vaatha roga to himself and relieved the Guru of the physical pain. As per the advice of famous Malayalam Poet Thunchathu Ezhuthachan, Bhattathiri went to Guruvayoor and started composing Narayaneeyam. On completion of 100th Dasakam, he got completely cured of his disease and got the Divya Darshanam of Lord Guruvayoorappa.
